The Volcano Trail Run

By Iceland Review

Running the Volcano Trail Run has been on my agenda for some time as the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places in Iceland. There is something magical about Þórsmörk, the contrasts in the landscape with the green birch forests, dark lava and glaciers looming over really make you feel humble against the forces of nature.

Ticking off the bucket list

The most famous hiking trails in Iceland, Laugavegur trail and Fimmvörðuháls, both end (or start) in Þórsmörk. I have done both of these trails a few times and really enjoyed staying in Þórsmörk afterwards. However, I have never taken the time to do some day hikes in Þórsmörk – so participating in the Volcano Trail Run and running the well known 12 km circle of Tindfjöll mountains (Tindfjallahringur) is ideal. The race is held in the middle of September so it is also the perfect opportunity to see the area in beautiful autumn colors.

The race

The route of the race leads from Húsadalur in Þórsmörk through some of the most beautiful landscape in Iceland. The trail goes through birch woods up onto the volcanic ridges and mountain tops over the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve before reaching the finish line back at Húsadalur.  The highest point of the route is the fell Valahnúkur which is 275m high.

There are no aid stations along the way, however, participants can fill up their water bottles with water from the creeks that are on the way.

Magical Þórsmörk

Þórsmörk – named after the Norse god Thor –  has some of the best hiking trails in Iceland with a panoramic view over the valley, the glacier river Krossá running through it, and the surrounding mountains and glaciers. The famous and majestic Eyjafjallajökull is in the backdrop and the glacier Mýrdalsjökull at the end of the valley. As the area is only accessible with buses or four wheel drive jeeps, the area  is generally a lot less crowded  than other popular attractions in Iceland.

The Volcano Trail Run 2017

The race takes place on the 16th of September 2017. It is a great opportunity for a day or weekend trip from Reykjavik,  Þórsmörk is located 150 km away from the city. The race is held by the Volcano Huts in Húsadalur, who also offer a package that includes the race, travel and accommodation for those who want to have more time to explore this wonderful area.
